This tune is without question the ultimate Missouri fiddler's anthem. Possibly named for John S. Marmaduke, a Confederate general and later governor of Missouri. This tune was popular for dance and contest play up through the mid-1980s. I was treated to many great versions of this tune when I was growing. It was played by Taylor McBaine and Pete McMahan from Boone County, by Cyril Stinnett up in Holt County and by countless fiddlers in the Ozarks. The best rendition of this tune I ever heard, however, was from the left-handed fiddler, Jake Hockemeyer, of Mokane in Callaway County. ---Charlie Walden
